The exhibition of the 16thLINE gallery presents the work of Sigmar Polke, one of the greatest masters of contemporary art and the foremost representative of German Postmodernism. 40 gouache paintings created in 1996 may be considered as an original digest of Polke's work, his favorite techniques and motifs.

The "Music from an Unknown Source" series gives a comprehensive introduction to the signature style of the artist, which made him famous around the world: his love for the classical German print, mix of different techniques and quotations, play with clichés, sarcastic phrasings of the titles. Polke's works are based upon ironic play of quotes from both classical art and avant-garde, masterful composition of the classical etching technique with ultra-modern technologies, fastidiously put together with objects of present-day civilization. Whether it be halftone dots of newspaper reproductions or usual elements of the object world. In his works he addresses the audience in the language of pure painting, simultaneously subduing its pathos by the use of absurdly ironical quasi-quotations from tabloids.

Opening: October 25, 2012.
